1920s Atholl Steel House Renovation

Guildford, Surrey

The Atholl Steel House Company was established in 1924 by Sir William Beardmore and the Duke of Atholl. As an early pioneer of system-built housing, the company produced standard steel-framed and clad homes at the Beardmore steelworks in Mossend.

This in-house project involved a complete renovation of one such property, including the full replacement of the external steel framework and cladding. The original 1/8-inch boiler plate cladding--severely corroded after more than 80 years--was replaced with 3 mm Zintec steel sheets, precision-punched and joggled to replicate the original plate design. Finished with a wet-sprayed BS 12-C-40 Juniper Green enamel coating, the new panels are designed to endure well beyond another 80 years.

The renovation was featured in The Telegraph and on BBC Radio 4
